Homer Dukes
Homer F. Dukes of Toms River, formerly of Union, died on Jan. 25.
Mr. Dukes was a World War II Navy veteran and a recipient of the
Purple Heart. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Council
4505, American Legion Post 35 and DAV of Union. Mr. Dukes was
treasurer and field representative for the late congressman,
Matthew J. Rinaldo. Surviving are his wife, Josephine; two
daughters, Patricia Carroll and Carol Dukes; a son, Lt. Col.
Richard Dukes; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
The Oliverie Funeral Home, Manchester, handled the
arrangements.
Michael Hannon
Michael “Mickey” William Hannon, 79, of Union died Jan. 26 in
Runnells Specialized Hospital of Union County, Berkeley Heights.
Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., Mr. Hannon lived in the Vailsburg section
of Newark and South Orange before moving to Union four years ago.
He was a physical education teacher with the Clark Township Board
of Education from 1966 until retiring in 1996. Mr. Hannon also
worked as a bartender at Cryan’s, South Orange, and during the
summer, at the Sea Girt Inn at the Jersey shore. He was a 1954
graduate of Seton Hall University, South Orange, and was a member
of the Seton Hall University Basketball Hall of Fame. Mr. Hannon
played on the 1953 Seton Hall University basketball team that went
31-2 and its members were “NIT” champions. He was a member of Our
Lady of Sorrows Church, South Orange. Surviving are his wife, Alyce
A.; three daughters, Lisa Horton, Tara Aimutis and Maria Hernandez;
two brothers, Joseph and Gerard; a sister, Mildred Koehler, and six
grandchildren. The Preston Funeral Home, South Orange, handled the
arrangements.
Gertrude Kirsh
Gertrude Kirsh, 88, of Union died Jan. 25 in the Daughters of
Israel Nursing Home, West Orange. Born in Newark, Mrs. Kirsh had
lived in Union for 58 years. She was a nutritional speaker for Diet
Control Centers. Mrs. Kirsh was a member of Congregation B’nai
Ahavath Shalom, Union, and past president of its Sisterhood. She
was the past social secretary of Central Jersey Branch of Women’s
League of Conservative Judaism. Mrs. Kirsh was a life member and
chairperson of Hadassah. She also was a past chairperson of
Classmothers of Connecticut Farms School. Surviving are a daughter,
Francene Kirsh; a son, Ronald, and a grandchild. The Menorah
Chapels at Millburn in Union handled the arrangements.
